The problem is almost never the AI tool. It's the instruction. Ask ChatGPT to "write an email to my boss" and you get something long, formal, and forgettable, because you never told it who your boss is, how long the email should be, or what it must not make up.

A prompt is simply the text you type into an AI chat box. That's all the AI has to work from, so anything you leave out of it, the AI fills in on its own.

If you've typed a request into ChatGPT, read the reply, and thought that isn't what I meant, this is where the gap usually is. There's no secret phrase to learn. You just have to say more of what was already in your head.

What you get

Whichever job you pick, the builder asks four plain questions: who it's for, what it's about, what tone you want, and how long it should be. Each job words them to suit itself, so on the language page that first question asks who the AI should play rather than who's reading. Your answers come back as a finished prompt, ready to copy.

Every line of that prompt carries a label, and under the prompt there's a short note explaining what each line is doing. The role line. The task. The details you gave. The one that tells the AI what to leave alone. Some jobs need a line about layout and some don't, so the prompts aren't all the same length. Read the labels once and you'll start writing the same shape yourself, without the tool.

The last line is usually the one doing the most work. It's where you tell the AI not to invent what you left out, or not to stray outside the text you pasted. It won't always listen. But asking costs you nothing, and when it does listen you get a draft you can send instead of one you have to check line by line.
